The New Zealand Astrobiology Network NZAN is a charitable trust established in 2016 with the purpose to promote astrobiology study in New Zealand and featuring New Zealand as an excellent astrobiology field site to the world. While New Zealand benefits from excellent sites and knowledge base, efforts had been scattered around the country without a centralized strategy for development until 2014 astrobiology. Astrobiology is an emerging field. It was formalized as a field of study in the 1960’s, NASA established the National Astrobiology Institute as recently as 1998 (preceded by an earlier Exobiology program).
Astrobiology science, seeking to answer questions such as ‘what is life?’ and ‘are we alone in the Universe?’, can contribute to “the knowledge, skills, and values for successful citizens in the 21st century.”
